Floodlights and Training on Millwall Park

Floodlights and Training on Millwall Park Update...

The Lower Paddock where we train has some disadvantages so the current and previous committee have been working on getting Floodlights on the Park. This will be a fantastic advance for the club, we'll be able to train on a surface that will be much flatter and drier during the winter, it will be closer to the clubhouse and we'll have access to the showers there. It’s also somewhat of a necessity as the Farm have requested that the men do not train on the Paddock from now on as its damaging the surface for other Farm users. The women and Youth can continue to use the Paddock. Tower Hamlets have already approved training on the Park but obviously we'd need lights during the winter.

Planning Permission
As with many things worth doing, getting training under flood lights is not without its challenges. The first is that Tower Hamlets have raised the need for planning permission. This is a known requirement for large scale permanent installations of the type needed for games. Such installations are very expensive and so we're going to go initially for mobile lights, one of the main reasons is so that we can move the lights around the park and hence save the ground from wearing in any one particular place. Normally planning permission is not required for these type of lights and I'm working with the Council on this.

Funding
The second major challenge is the funding of these lights which will cost approximately £10,000 for the quality and area coverage we would need. The RFU will match funds we raise so we need a way of raising money. Many clubs take part in the RFU Grand Draw as the RFU arrange the draw and the prizes, clubs get 90% of the funds raised. Our target will therefore be to raise £5,000

Players – The more tickets we sell, the better quality of lights that we will have for our training.

We have a small sub-committee working on this already. If you feel you could help us, please get in contact with me, Andrea Bielska, GG Paling or Gareth Hargreaves or any of the club officers.

How you can Help
Though we are progressing well, there are many ways you can help move things along:
  • Have you done this in a previous club or do you know another club that has got floodlights recently?
  • Are you an engineer or otherwise technically capable to help source the correct lights? We need to choose between battery powered and diesel\patrol powered
  • Have you experience in fund raising especially with connection to the Grand Draw? Are you willing to help co-ordinate and sell tickets?
  • Do you know people on Tower Hamlets council especially in the Planning Department?

My Personal Objective
I’ve asked all of the new season’s committee to set objectives for their area and we’ll release these in due course. In the meantime, one of mine is to run at least two training sessions on the Park under flood lights by Christmas. I’ll come back to you with further details.

Thanks

Free WiFi Trial @ The Clubhouse!!!

WiFi Lands at the Clubhouse...

That's right folks, from Saturday 1st September we will be trialling WiFi at the clubhouse.  Member's will be able to bring their laptops / ipods / ipads / androids etc. down to the Clubhouse and get on-line!  Simply ask for the access code behind the bar!

The technology we are using is not the cheapest (as we do not have a normal phone line!), so depending on costs we may have to start charging a small amount in the future.  But for now simply look for the "MillwallRFC" network and enjoy!

If you have any questions about this please do not hesitate to email me at ryan@millwallrugby.com

Thanks,

The Clubhouse Team.

Social Activities & Announcements - Week of August 27th

Hi All,

Please note the activities going on during the week and this week’s announcements.

Clubhouse Openings

Hargreaves Hump Day – August 29th
You were worried that we wouldn’t be open on Wednesday since Wiggy is away and sunning himself in his speedo's in the south of France, Peter Stringfellow style.  Of course the clubhouse is open, Gareth Hargreaves will be filling in for Wiggy and has named his Wednesday coverage as Hargreaves Hump Day.  Why not come down to the clubhouse and share a drink and laugh with Gareth whom may respond to the name of Wiggy if you say it enough times…

This Wednesday not only marks the birth of Michael Jackson (Wacko Jacko nee 29/08/58) but also the Opening Ceremony of the Paralympics.  Come on down and eat some great food and cheer on our new group of athletes that will be going head to head to get medals for themselves and their countries.  The Opening Ceremony starts at 8:30 pm and will be aired in the clubhouse.  The clubhouse will open at 7:30 pm.

Chef Shezza will be serving a gold medal award winning chicken and chorizo risotto with garlic bread for dinner.

Inspired by the Olympics and Paralympics?  Cheese is leading his weekly workout from 7:30 to 8:30 pm in the park for £5 per person.  The workouts are tough but really great and you’ll notice a difference immediately!

Fantastic Friday – August 31st

Our delicate Irish Flower, Adrienne will be opening the clubhouse for us on Friday from 7:30 onwards.  Why not come down and watch the Paralympics with her and engage a bit of banter.  The Paralympics Athletics will be broadcast on this day, so come on down, watch some excellent sports, have a few drinks and exchange some banter..

Clubhouse & Games - Saturday, September 1st

What a fantastically rugby filled day!  We have rugby on the tele and our own teams are playing away at Hackney.  The times are to be confirmed for the Hackney games but we’ll be sure to let you know so you can go out and cheer on the women and men’s teams.   The clubhouse will be open from 3 onwards.

So feel free to either go out to Hackney to support our teams or come down to the clubhouse.  Please see the link below if you’re not sure where the Hackney Rugby Club is located.

Reminder/Announcements

Monthly Clothing/Kit Clear-out

Have you left any clothing/coats/kit/boots at the club over the summer??? We have laid out the various bits of clothing left over the last few months in the clubhouse onto the blue sofas - so why not pop down this Wednesday or Friday evening to see if you can be reunited with those long lost pairs of boots, training top or.......brand new School Uniform (10/1 bet this is Wiggy's)!!!

Any items not collected by the end of this Saturday (1st September) will be disposed of (with no exceptions).

Please note we have a monthly clothing/kit clear-out on the 1st Saturday of every month due to the fact that space is at a premium in our clubhouse (especially with the Porta-kabin on the farm now gone). So please ensure you take any of your items before then as any items left in the clubhouse after this date will be disposed of (with no exceptions).

Membership

Not a paid member yet or need to renew your old membership?

We’d like to remind you that some of our memberships will be coming up for renewal over the next few months.  Please be mindful to renew your memberships and to sign up if you’re currently not a member.  Please email membership@millwallrugby.com if you have any questions or  visit our website for membership information,  to sign up and pay:  http://www.millwallrugby.com/membership/paymembership.html

Volunteering

Interested in volunteering behind the bar?  Please email ryan@millwallrugby.com if you’d like to volunteer.  Those that are currently trained should have access to sign up but please feel free to contact him if you need access again.

Mens Playing Meeting - 28th Aug 8:30pm

With the new season due to start at the end of September it’s time to get back training and get ourselves organised for the coming year.

Last year we finished the season on a positive note winning seven out our last nine games while playing some nice rugby in the process. Considering how well we finished last year there is no reason why we can’t improve on last season and look at finishing top of the league. This season we will also have three men’s teams representing the club, so there will be plenty of opportunities to represent the club at whatever level you are comfortable with playing.

To get the ball rolling we are holding a player meeting on Tuesday August the 28th at the Clubhouse from 8:30pm. This will be a chance to have a couple of beers and have a brief chat about the coming season.

Please make an effort to attend as we are eager to get a strong start to the season.

Please respond yes / no / maybe to selection@millwallrugby.com

See you then

Shaf

Clubhouse Openings & Announcements Week of August 20th

Hi All!

We just wanted to let you know of the activities going on around the clubhouse for this week and also some additional announcements.

Firstly, we’d like to thank everyone who volunteered, played and came out for the Open Day!  I hope that you all were able to connect with old friends and meet some new ones too!  It was a great day to be hanging out with everyone!

Clubhouse Openings
Wiggy Wednesday – 22nd August
Why not come down to Wiggy Wednesday and just relax and hang out with some friends over a nice drink and some lovely food.  You can have a taste of Tex Mex with Chef Shezza’s delicious Chicken Fajitas.  Unfortunately, there is no draft lager in the clubhouse for Wednesday...  Seems we had an excellent time on Saturday... J

Clubhouse Open on Friday 24th August
The clubhouse will be open as of 19:30 on the 24th of August.  The draft lager will be back on tap by Friday (woo hoo).  What better way to start a bank holiday weekend than come down and have a few drinks with some friends?

Clubhouse Clear Out Day! – Sunday, 26th August

Fancy giving your pre-season training a kick-start and smashing things with hammers???
Well CMC member Gareth is running a clear out day at the clubhouse this coming Sunday starting from 10.30am.  Every 6 months or so, it is useful to blitz our clubhouse and get ourselves ready for the first weekend of the new season. We are looking to blitz the office, out the back and the 2nd arch.
We need more people to help with this, so please email gareth@millwallrugby.com to put your name forward.  (There are also rumours the CHO Ryan may stand the helpers a drink or two.. To be confirmed :-)
If anyone has a transit van which we can use for the day please also email gareth@millwallrugby.com as then we can minimise the trips we have to take to the tip at the top of the Island. If not, if you can bring down cars and we can share the load that way.
Bring some gloves and wear scruffy gear as it is bound to get dusty…

Nomination of Honorary Life Members

The management committee would like to remind members of the nomination process for Honorary Life Membership.

Honorary Life membership confers the same benefits of Life Membership, but may be awarded from time to time at the Management Committee's discretion.  Cases when the committee might decide to award life membership might include (but are not limited to):

  • Significant contribution (in effort, in time, professional services, pro bono work, or financial) to the club or the club's affiliated charity. Usually the monetary value would significantly exceed the normal cost of buying life membership.
  • Long service or particular dedication in some way to the club as a volunteer, committee member or similar.
Honorary Life Membership may be removed at the club's committee's discretion, in the event of misconduct or instances of bringing the club into disrepute. In the rare and unlikely event of this happening, this would probably only be done at the recommendation of a properly convened club disciplinary committee. Honorary Life Membership can, of course, be awarded to current life members or life member partners, but no refund would be due.

So how do you nominate someone?

  • Any paid up club member can nominate another person for Honorary Life Membership by emailing or writing to any of the current club management committee members who will ask the secretary to include it for discussion at the next CMC meeting where time is available.
  • Life membership is a privilege which can only be granted in limited circumstances. CMC will discuss the nomination and assess whether the person should be put onto a short list for further review at a special CMC meeting at season end. The successful nominee will be informed by the Chairman or Secretary of the club as soon as possible after the CMC meeting.
  • The actual Award of Life Membership, or Awards in the case of multiple recipients, will then be announced at the club's Annual End of Season Dinner.

- Your preferred price (£80, £65, £56, £40)?
- Are you flexible on the price of the tickets?

In addition to the cost of the ticket the Club will be charging an admin fee of £5 per tickets, payable at the time of purchase.

Remember these tickets can not be bought buy the general public and fetch a premium of nearly £40 if we sold them directly to approved hospitality providers, so make sure you take advantage of this great opportunity and privilege of being a member of the Club.

The important dates:

- 21st of August - Application period will closes.
- 23rd of August - You will have been notified of whether you’ve been successful.
- 1st of September - Payment in full must have been received, this is to allow us time to sell them to an approved hospitality vendor or to return any unsold tickets to the RFU

If we are over subscribed preference will given to those who volunteer for the Club.

To get access to these tickets, you first need to make sure your club membership is paid and up to date. We are only allowed to let you purchase tickets if you have been a member for at least 2 weeks prior to purchase.

Lastly remember the tickets are for personal use, if you are caught selling them on to a ticket tout or on the internet the Club will get in trouble and may well have our ticket allocation reduced or removed.

Good Luck and we hope to see you all down at the Club on Saturday for the Open Day.

Regards,

Milwall Rugby Club

Clubhouse Open on Friday the 10th of August!!

Hello Millwall,

As Elton John once nearly said: “Friday Night’s Alright For Fighting” and with 4 Brits in the semis tonight who could blame him?. We’ve certainly gone boxing mad at the clubhouse.

Please feel free to come down to help us celebrate “Fight Night” tonight with your glamorous Ring Card Dolly Birds Adrienne and, errrr, Gareth Hargreaves behind the bar.

As a highlight, young Anthony Joshua is hoping to go all the way in the Super Heavyweight division but must get past the massive Kazakh Ivan Dychk first. It should be a great occasion!!

To help get us in the mood (and definitely not because we want to get rid of Wednesday’s awful Jamaican pop) we will be selling jugs of Caribbean Punch @ £10.

We look forward to seeing you from 7:30 on...

Clubhouse Free Stuff, Clear out Day & Monthly Disposals!

The 2012-2013 Season Is Approaching!

And with that in mind we are doing a couple of things to try and improve the clubhouse before the start of the new season.

Free Stash!

One of our players has donated a sizeable amount of kit that he has gathered over his career.  This is all free so just turn up to the clubhouse before the 1st of September and grab what you want.

Clubhouse Deep Clean & Clear Out Day!

General CMC member Gareth is running a deep clean day / clean out day at the clubhouse on the 25th August 2012.  Every 6 months or so it is useful to blitz our clubhouse and get ourselves ready for the first weekend of the new season.  We need more people to help with this, so please email gareth@millwallrugby.com to put your name forward.  (There are also rumours the CHO Ryan may stand the helpers a drink or two.. To be confirmed :-)

Monthly Disposals!

From the 1st of September 2012 (and on the 1st Saturday of each following month) we will be disposing of ALL left rugby kit and / or personal items in the clubhouse, so if you have boots, jackets, tops, gumshield etc, make sure you collect it ASAP.  We do not have the space to store left clothing items so we have start throwing it away / recycling it.  You have been warned :-)

Upcoming Events!

Club Open Day - 18th August 2012.  The Flyers will soon be coming hot off the press of the printers and appearing around the area.  Make sure you spread the word and lets get as many people down to the club for the Touch tournament / open day as possible.

Keep your eyes peeled on the blog / website for more details of events coming up in the coming months at YOUR clubhouse.

Upcoming Social Events at the Clubhouse!!!

Wiggy Wednesday – 8th of August

The 200m semi-finals are on from 20.10, which will be recorded for those that will be in the clubhouse a little later.  There will be West Indian themed cocktails along with a little bit of reggae that will surely set the mood for the night.  Also, Chef Shezza will be serving Chicken Rice and Peas (more like kidney beans for those who haven’t had it before).  It’ll be like visiting Jamaica without the travel!
For those of you inspired by the Olympics, why not come down and train with Cheese from 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm and then visit the clubhouse to get some excellent food, drinks and company.  The clubhouse will be open from 7:30 pm onwards.

Pub Crawl – Saturday the 11th of August
We will be having a pub crawl on the Isle of Dogs to advertise our Open Day on the 18th of August. You have to wear something Millwall and if you don't have anything then Millwall colours will do. The schedule is as follows:

The Ship 5:50 - 6:30
The Ferry House 6:40 - ??

So come for the beginning or meet us along the way!  Please RSVP on the Facebook event page:  http://www.facebook.com/#!/events/303578429741099/

Open Day – Saturday the 18th of August
This is sure to be a fun day where we get to share with the community and guests how great Millwall is!  There will be touch rugby on in the park.  We’ll also have a BBQ going along with showing the 4 Nations games.  We’ll need volunteers to help out on the day and just those that want to come down and have fun.  Please invite your friends and help us spread the word!  We’ll have more details coming out soon about this, but you’ll definitely want to save the date!

Also, the men’s team returns to training this night so this could be a good opportunity to meet the guys that will be on the pitch next season if you haven’t already.
