Clubhouse openings this week - w/c 30/12

New Years Eve - Wed 31st Dec to 1st Jan early hours - DM SMc - Open from 9pm
We hope you all had a good break and what better way to see in the new year at the clubhouse - no queues, no door charge, great company, great music (courtesy of DJ Stu), cheap drinks and  a late licence!!

It's so popular, 'Cheese' and Emma-Louise have flown over all the way from New Zealand for the social event of the year. So make the effort, come on down, dress to impress and see you there.

And then when you saunter/stagger home in the early hours you can get all excited in anticipation of turning your Millwall Calendar over to the first page (still around 10-15 copies left).

Sat 4th Jan - DM RK (planning to open from 4pm if home games are confirmed) Ryan will be opening the clubhouse so we can all come down and watch the 2nds start their new year campaign off at home. Please note that if there are no home games the clubhouse will NOT be opening - so make sure you keep checking facebook for updates as to whether the club is open/closed

Free Drink!!
Now we have your attention ;-) - Going into 2014 we have a low number of duty managers available to open/close the
clubhouse especially on Fridays/Saturdays. Please click on these links to email Ryan or Gareth if you want to help out and be trained as either bar staff or duty managers so we can continue to be open during 2014.

Mens Training 18th December - CANCELLED / New Year Schedule

Guys,

As there are no matches this weekend (21st) and therefore, based on last Wednesday, the likelihood of very low turn out, we have called off training this week.

That said, we now have to start thinking about the New Year and the huge challenges ahead.  The schedule is as follows:

4 January - 1st XV v Writtle (a)
                   2nd XV v Canvey Island (h)
                   3rd XV v Old Brentwood (a)
6 January - Mens Training
8 January - Mens Training
11 January - 1st XV v May & Baker (a)
                    2nd XV v Wanstead (a)
                    3rd XV v Ilford (h)

You have almost 3 weeks notice that there is Monday/Wednesday training the first week back therefore no excuses for non attendance.  The easy part is over this season, now it's the hard part of getting at least two teams over the line and promoted this season.

Happy Christmas

David

Clubhouse openings this week (w/c 9/12)

All,

Last weekend saw a fantastic performance both on and off the pitch with the 1sts winning 29-7, the 2nds with a massive 85-0 blowout victory and the 3rds with a narrow loss 17-15. Off the field the Christmas Party was a big one and we also managed to find our way to a cheeky mention in Rugby World (see the facebook page for pictures of both).

This week we have two  away games:
1sts - week off since Phantoms dropped out the league
2nds @ Loughton
3rds @ Southend

The club will be open this week during the following times this week;

Wednesday - Hargreaves Hump Day - DM GH open from 7.30PM
Gareth's back to help you with training....for mid week Xmas drinking. There will be curry ordered to arrive at 9pm for those of you who are interested. Please note that there will also be a local community meeting held in the clubhouse from 6.30-8pm.

Wednesday - PLAYERS MEETING (ALL PLAYERS) 9.00pm
Also, there is a players meeting following training tomorrow night. This is your opportunity to have your say about how the club is run and where you would like ot see the club developing in the next year. It is important that as many people make it down as possible, it's straight after training and will be short so no excuses!

Friday - Karen's Weekend Warmup - DM KA open from 7.30PM
Karen will be opening this Friday to ease you into the weekend!

Saturday - DM GH - open from 5PM until 11PM
Normal Saturday Service is resumed following the all time record weekend that was the christmas party last week. Due to te fact that there are no home games this weekend, the clubhouse will not open until 5pm.

Mr Shorrock and family are back in the UK and he has promised to make an appearance in the clubhouse on Saturday.

He assures me that this is not just to avoid paying the shipping charges on the Millwall calendars we are selling over the bar for just £8 and around the world for just slightly more (AUS, NZ, CAN and the far reaches of the UK - isn't that right Perry?).

So if you have already ordered your calendar, please come and pick it up, or buy one asap (as we are not sure how often we will be open over the Xmas period and you don't want to 'disappoint' your intended recipient) ;-)

We are also looking for volunteers to help her run and help out behind the bar both over this weekend and over the Xmas period. The bar is run entirely by unpaid volunteers and without these we cannot open. So if you are bar trained, please email ryan@millwallrugby.com letting him know what time you can give.

Player Development Night Notes

Player Development and Coaching Night

Last Tuesday night we kicked off the Player Development and Coaching Development Programs. We had a good attendance which included Darren Morrant, the Essex Coaching Coordinator

Content of the Night

We talked about

  • what player development is
  • where coaching fits into that
  • Opportunities for players to understand more about technique and CPD courses
  • The RFU coaching structure
  • The Laws and how Millwall can save points in games
  • we looked briefly at video from the Women's game against East London and the Mens England V ROW game last year and how players could improve individually and as a team

Presentation

If you'd like to see the presentation I used, please have a look here. The videos are on You Tube, mens and women's games
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/g3w9b3wr9164u8f/3tOOad6AEz

Some Notes from the Night

  • Players are interested in more technical training and would like to see Monday nights being devoted to more of this. We could do them once or twice per month, more if the interest is there
  • Coaching is one part of player development. Its also important players get a chance to learn from fellow players, reading, videos etc
  • Players and coaches are interested in doing the CPDs e.g. Scrum Factory, Back Play from Set Pieces, Maul and Ruck, Game Planning. Darren can help us attend these, maybe get some at Millwall
  • Once players do a CPD, they could come back on a Monday night and do some sessions on what was learned
  • We could have 4 circuits of training drills ranging from simple for beginners to more complicated for more advanced
  • We'd video some things e.g the back's moves and replay them in the clubhouse
  • The Laws are a key part of the game and we'd like to understand more about them and how to stay on the right side of them

Monthly Millwall Thirst Thursdays:
The two past editions have been successes, so we’re going to carry on with this good momentum! The December one will be skipped though as we are all busy with Xmas parties here and there, so see you all in January for the next one.
For those who haven’t joined us yet, Millwall Thirst Thursdays are drinks organized on the first Thursday of each month, either in the City or Canary Wharf, to have a chance to have a chat with other people from the club, wear Millwall kit/colours and publicise for the club, oh,  and have drinks and a good night out of course!

Monthly Sunday Pub Quiz @ the Clubhouse:
We’ve held our first pub quiz last Sunday at the Clubhouse, and we can say it’s been good fun! So quizzes will be back from January, we are aiming to have one per month, with the almighty Mike B as quizmaster.
More info about dates to follow shortly.

6 Nations:
You haven’t got a chance to get tickets for games? Well, don’t worry the clubhouse will be open for the 6

Improve Your Playing - Coaching Open Night

What do you need to do to be a Better Rugby Player?

Next Tuesday, we'll have an Open Evening which is all about how people can be better rugby players.

There are obviously several ways that this can happen and all of them involve you doing something e.g. getting fitter, understanding a key aspect of the game, improving a personal skill etc. Some of this you can recognise yourself and some can be pointed out by someone e.g. a fellow player or someone dedicated to do this - a coach

The night is billed as a coaching Open night but its about more than the club developing coaches, its about players understanding what it is to play rugby and how you can get better. We'll use some video footage of Millwall games to generate some thoughts and  the night will have the Essex Coaching Co-ordinator

Coaching Open Night

December 3rd – 7.30pm-9.00pm
Clubhouse

How do players get better, what is coaching and what is it in the context of rugby. Why do people want to coach?
Video Analysis session using footage from Millwall games as an example
RFU Coaching structure and how people are guided through it. Coaching courses coming up and how to get onto them plus coaching in Millwall
Coaching in terms of individual and team, strength and conditioning, tactics
The Laws and how to use them to your advantage (Mike - your input will be valuable)
Running a session or drills, the EDICT model, explain, demonstrate, imitate, correct etc

Video from examples including

Women's game and Men's games e.g

Training & Matches this week

Guys,

Firstly a well done to the 1st team against Stanford Le Hope and an even bigger well done to the Llamas for their cup win against Writtle.

That said, it was not the best feeling to have to cancel the 3rd team fixture due to a lack of numbers so please, let's remedy that this weekend with 3 league fixtures to be played.

The 1st team travel to Pegasus, the 2nd team travel to Upminster, whilst the 3rd team have a big fixture against London Lithuanians at home.  Let's have three strong squads for the challenge ahead and let selection and the team managers know ASAP that you are available.

Training this week is Wednesday only, I ask for one night a week so please don't let your teammates down by not attending.

We're winning because we're training...

See you Wednesday

DM & Quiz Master TBC open from 3PM, quiz from 5.30PM
This is a new monthly slot which Jo our social secretary has set-up. So come down and pit your wits against your fellow members.
The first quiz we are doing is a charity one to raise funds for the RFU Injured Players Foundation. It is also themed to tie into the 10th anniversary of England winning the world cup - so plenty of rugby related questions to go at.

The RFU Injured Players Foundation is the official charity of England Rugby. With your backing, they look after seriously injured players for life and help prevent future injuries through research and education (and they have provided us with medical kits in the past for free).

Places are only £5 per person (with a max of 8 people per team*)

*Mr Beech can only play in a maximum team size of 1 - otherwise it's not fair ;-)
