Millwall Rugby Open Day - Saturday 10th August 2013

Everyone is welcome down to the Club for our Open Day on Saturday 10th August 2013 from 12pm

Touch Tournament
Whether you've never thrown a ball before; already play; are looking for a more focused way of getting fit; would like to get involved with helping run the club or would simply enjoy having a few drinks with like-minded people in the clubhouse, it will be a day full of fun with touch rugby sessions starting at 12pm on Millwall Park for youth and adult players. So come down and find out what we are all about.

BBQ
There will be a BBQ serving lunch and dinner and the clubhouse will be open all day for everyone to get to know each other off the pitch.

Based next to Island Gardens DLR stop on the Isle of Dogs, and being just a 10 minute journey from Canary Wharf, we are very easy to find. We have 3 men's teams, a women's team and a range of youth age groups.

Fancy Dress - Father Ted
This years theme is Father Ted meets Country and Western. Prizes for best outfits and bonus points in the touch competition

Whatever your interest or experience you'll find a warm and friendly welcome at Millwall Rugby Club.

Membership Fees Changes (with effect from 01/08/13)

The club's management committee met recently to review the club's membership charges. This year we've made a number of changes to the way membership works and these are effective as of 1st August 2013.

We hope that the changes below will encourage greater membership of the club and help us cover our increased running costs.

> You can join or renew here

Overview of Changes

PAYG Membership
  • Mens PAYG initial fee             - Reduced to £40 (currently £60)
  • Mens subs                             - Kept the same (at £10 per game)
  • Venus PAYG initial fee            - Kept the same (at £40)
  • Venus subs                            - Kept the same (at £7.50 per game)
  • Concession PAYG initial fee    - Kept the same (at £25)
  • Concession PAYG subs          - Kept the same (at £3 per game)
  • Social membership                 - Increased to £30 (currently £25)
  • Life membership                     - Kept the same (at £1000)

  • 8m Standing Orders               - Reduced to £25 per month (currently £32.50)
  • 12m Standing Orders             - Reduced to a maximum of £15 per month (currently £20)
            • (This only applies to Players currently on this scheme)
Effective Date of Changes
  • From 1st August 2013 (including any pre/post-dated renewals)
  • As a special 'offer' If you choose to renew your social membership before the 1st August you will get the £25 rate (even if it is due for renewal after 1st August).

If you have any questions about these changes, please speak to Gareth Hargreaves or email him on gareth@millwallrugby.com

And the changes in more detail....

Loyalty Rewarded for people paying by Standing Order
  • As in previous years, to say thank-you, we've decided to allow members with current 12m standing order arrangements to continue paying as they do right now so long as they do not cease or amend the arrangement.
  • For those players on the 8m scheme - please amend your standing order to £25 from your September payment date.
  • For those players who are already on the 12m scheme who pay more than £15 per month - please amend your standing order to £15 from your August payment date.
  • Please note that the 12m option is only available to players already on this scheme.

Social Membership
  • Increased to £30, the last time memberships were amended was in August 2011 and we feel this still represents excellent value for money
  • As a special 'offer' If you choose to renew your social membership before the 1st August you will get the £25 rate (even if it is due for renewal after 1st August).

Volunteer Discount
  • In order to encourage volunteering, we will continue to reward people who make a significant contribution of their time to the club. They will be entitled to claim 50% off their membership fees and any match day subs due. This discount will apply to all categories and methods of paying membership except life membership. In this day and age, with time an ever precious commodity, we believe this is one of the fairest ways of rewarding people who give up their time to make the club work.
  • The discount will continue to apply to all club management committee roles and all other elected positions if the position holder wishes to take advantage of it.
  • The discount will also be available to all other club (sub)committee members and volunteers, including unpaid coaches and unpaid referees upon application to the respective management committee chair and subsequent approval by CMC. A volunteer may need to pay the full amount and receive a rebate later following CMC approval.
  • The discount on subs shall apply as long as the committee member/volunteer continues to serve as such. A discounted membership shall remain valid as long as the committee member/volunteer continues to serve.
  • For more detail on this scheme, please ask the Secretary.

Life Membership
  • This is frozen at £1000 lump-sum and covers your membership and match day subs for life.  If you want to pay over 12 instalments, the price is £1200 (12 x £100).

Membership Cards
  • Members will receive a simple laminated card bearing their name, membership type and an expiry date to make it easier for coaches, team managers and bar staff to see whether membership is valid.
  • Membership cards will be created within 1 month of paying your membership and will be placed behind the bar for collection.

Just a note to let you know what’s in store for this week.

We are also celebrating the following events in history
  • 1740 – A combined force Spanish, free blacks and allied Indians defeat a British garrison at the Siege of Fort Mose near St. Augustine during the War of Jenkins' Ear. - hopefully not an omen for the game on Saturday?
  • 1948 – William Shockley files the original patent for the grown junction transistor, the first bipolar junction transistor. - sounds like a prequel to the 'flux capacitor' to me?
  • 1974 – The Universal Product Code is scanned for the first time to sell a package of Wrigley's chewing gum at the Marsh Supermarket in Troy, Ohio

Fri 28th June - Karen's weekend warm-up - Open from 7.30pm

Your flexible friend 'Flex' will be opening the clubhouse to ensure that everyone is ready to go for the second test of the Lions series (hopefully the series clincher).

Any other games which are on Sky or terrestrial TV will be recorded so we can watch them afterwards. So there will be enough to keep you entertained right through the day.

Your afternoon/evening DM from 4pm is our Chairperson Mrs McCabe. There is also a rumour that she may be accompanied by the 1st Lady of Millwall .... Larry

RugbyForce Weekend

Millwall Rugby Club took part in NatWest RugbyForce on 15th & 16th June, a nationwide programme developed in partnership with the RFU, which aims to help community rugby clubs become stronger businesses.

Members of the club and local community improved the rugby club’s facilities by clearing the overgrown area out the back of the clubhouse, digging and levelling the ground and then paving it to provide a safe outside storage facility, freeing up valuable space inside the clubhouse.

Huge thanks to everyone who helped out, particularly Gareth (who organised it) & Kirstie Hargreaves, Matt Caldecourt, Gigi, Manu, Sophie Morris, Adrienne, Wiggy, George, Randall, Lorena, Sophie Buckman, Stephane, Shaun Cook, Paul Fisher, Tim, Lucie, Sarah and Karen.

Any budding writers or statisticians out there? Be a voice of Millwall Rugby Club.

We all enjoyed having match programmes this year and, of course, we all want our stats recorded correctly, but without new volunteers these things won't happen.

Are you a budding writer or sports journalist, or just have something to say? We need new volunteers to look after Programme Production and Editorial, and the Match Statistics and Caps database.

Please let me know asap if you'd be interested in doing this. We have ready-to-go templates for you work from.
