  • Men & Women who want to come back to rugby and pick it up again,
  • Social members, volunteers or physios curious to learn more,
  • Touch Rugby players who'd like to learn a bit about the full Rugby Union game.
  • Current third team players who would like to improve their technique
  • Current players who'd like to learn about playing in a different position.
What to bring:
  • Yourself ready to have fun.
  • Some football or rugby boots if you have them (trainers are OK if you don't)
  • Shorts & old t-shirt or rugby jersey that can get muddy
  • Something warm and dry to put on afterwards

Want to help your club? - current vacancies on the club committee

As you may or may not be aware your club is run entirely by volunteers, and we currently have a couple of vacant positions on the club committee.

  • 1st Team manager (1 expression of interest so far)
  • 2nd Team manager (1 expression of interest so far)
  • Venus manager
  • Development officer
If you are interested in helping to run your club in our 20th anniversary year and any of the above roles appeal, please send an email to Karen Anderson (club secretary) on secretary@millwallrugby.com before 31st December 2014 indicating which role you would like to volunteer for.

If you would like further information with regards to these roles, please feel free to speak to the outgoing position holder or any committee member to get a feel for what the role entails or referring to the role descriptions on the club website committee page
_____________________________________________________________________

For those roles which receive just one expression of interest by 31/12/14, this person will be notified and 'co-opted' formally at the next committee meeting on 13th Jan 2015 (although they will be in role asap).

For those roles which receive more than one expression of interest by 31/12/14, these will be discussed at the next committee meeting and the successful applicant will be showered in a flavour of Hooch of their choice* (*this may or may not happen).
_____________________________________________________________________

From personal experience, I can say that a committee role is both rewarding and challenging and it's a great feeling to be so deeply involved in a club and see it grow from strength to strength.

For those who think you have to be at the club a while before going into a committee role - I don't think this necessarily matters - I joined in Nov 2011 and by April 2012 I had taken a committee role (and have been in one ever since)

Granted, some would say me bringing Hooch into the club is tantamount to bringing the club into disrepute, I will leave my peers to decide on that......

Last week I mentioned I was looking for some people to help with the club's social media.

First, I'm looking for someone who likes using Instagram. We have a club account and I'd like to find someone who can snap a few pictures each week and hashtag them up appropriately to promote the club.

If you can help, please get in touch with me.

Love Instagram, Vines, YouTube? Terrific at Tweeting?

Hello everyone!

Just a note to say I'm looking to set up a Communications Subcommittee so that we can extend the good work the club does with social media, video, Twitter, blogging, the programme etc.

This isn't necessarily about creating meetings, although we will probably occasionally: I'm looking for people who are interested in:

1. Instagram
2. Vines
3. YouTube
4. Twitter
5. Facebook
6. Copywriting
7. Press/PR
8. Photography
9. Videography

And... of course, "Rugby"!

I'd like to create a panel of people interested in creating quality content who will work closely with me to help promote the playing activities of the club, including our O2Touch scheme.

Please drop me a line at communications@millwallrugby.com if you're interested.

4TH DEC THIRST THURSDAY

The nights are drawing in now and in the immortal words of that guy off game of thrones "winter's comin'..." so what better way to prepare than surround yourself by cozy surroundings and good company.....

Unfortunately we can only offer the former, good company will have to be substituted for those stalwarts of hard hitting conversation that are the members of Millwall Rugby Club.

Expect such topics as:
- Since the creation of the bakewell tart bomb and the cockney bomb, is it morally correct to invent a haggis bomb for our cousins north of the border?
- are they yellow moustaches or some sort of marital aid?
- will anyone ever try jellied eels?
- who is up for going to see the darts?

...and many more discerning questions relevant to life in the urban jungle in 2014.

All this and more, (possibly including red shoes), at.....

Time to come back to training?

The RFU coach visited again tonight to run a men's training session on the park and we had reasonably good numbers again, which was great.  But we'd still like to have more of you out there training each Monday and Wednesday, as Cookie has said in his weekly updates.

For me tonight, it was a return to training after a bit of a break (=understatement of the year).

The RFU coaches are running our men's training on Wednesdays at the moment we are really lucky that they are able to do this for us (at no cost to the club).  On Mondays we are still training but running it ourselves.

As they say a club that trains together plays well together and we are keen to see more Llamas and third team players turning up to training too.  It's good for the club and good for you too, and we should start to see the benefits on the pitch on Saturdays.

The RFU coach has asked me to reiterate to players, that training is not just for first team squad and they are able to adjust the content of the sessions to suit the people who turn up, so that means if we have a good split of first and second/third team players, they will split the activity to make it appropriate to all.  Everyone will be welcomed.

So there really is no reason not come back to training...  The club needs you!

If not now, when?... will you be there next Wednesday?

Touch Rugby Tournament Tomorrow (Sun 16th Nov)

Just a note to let you know that we now have enough people registered to play tomorrow, so it will definitely be happening.  We would still like more of you to register, and indeed we definitely need some more women to register so we can play proper mixed touch rugby.

Please register here.

Just a few points of admin:

  1. No metal studs allowed - you need plastic studded/bladed football- or rugby- or touch-boots. If you don't have boots, trainers are fine, but be aware the ground is muddy and slippery.
  2. Bring water to drink. Bring a plastic bin bag to keep your bag dry if it rains (rain will not stop play!).  Bring a warm, dry change of clothes for afterwards in case you get muddy.
  3. It's competitive but its about having fun and Flex reserve's the right to mix up the teams a bit to make sure this happens.
  4. If you haven't registered please do so. It really helps us plan the teams. Please register here.
  5. Registered players need to arrive at 12.30pm so we can warm up and issue instructions for a prompt 1pm start.  The tournament will end at 3pm, so that the quiz can begin at 3.15/3.30pm for a 4pm latest start.
  6. If you don't register it's OK to come along still, but please arrive a little earlier at 12.15 to allow us to adjust the teams to accommodate.
  7. If you haven't ever played touch rugby before, please arrive at 12.15pm and tell us you're new and that you need to be taught how to play.  (It will be much harder to give you proper tuition if you arrive after 12.30pm).
  8. It's free of charge to play this week
  9. Bring £2 to enter the puz quiz afterwards
  10. Have fun.
If you have any questions, contact touch@millwallrugby.com or phone Flex on 07734 103610.

We have been told you can just turn up on Sunday if you are interested.  There is no need for Millwall members to pre-advise their attendance but in an emergency you can contact Matt Bray by email at mattbray@rfu.com or by telephone on 07889 601261.

Introduce a new player in 2014 and get £20.14 to spend at the bar!

As part of the club's recent adult recruitment efforts, we need YOUR help!

We'd like you to contact your friends, family, work colleagues, neighbours; anyone you know who is interested in playing rugby and encourage them to come along and try a training session and then encourage them to join as a club member.

If you bring them along to participate in any adult training session, touch rugby session or Rugby Basics session before the end of 2014 AND persuade them to join straight away, we'll give you £20.14 to spend at the bar as a thank you!

Just contact membership@millwallrugby.com to introduce your new member to us.

Terms:

  • You need to be a paid-up, current club member yourself.
  • Over 18s only.
  • You must bring a new member to any adult training session, touch rugby session or Rugby Basics session, or as a player on a match-day before 31st December 2014 and they must participate as a player or beginner.
  • The new player must join and pay membership within 4 weeks of first coming along to their session/game.
