Post or Pre Rehabilitation Programs

PAUL CHENEY REHABILITATION SPECIALIST

(Please note the following service which Paul can offer to Millwall members)

In recent weeks it has become evident that a large number of players are either suffering from slight or debilitating injuries and with no way during training to administer a rehab programs; I have decided to offer everyone specialised programs and/or sessions

These could either be held in the gym (Greenwich) for which I have a practice or St Davids Square.

I will offer.

  • Inform you on the underlining problem and a time frame for when you can expect to recover.  (Diagnosis & Prognosis)
  • 1 to 1 sessions to quicken your recovery and strengthening; designed specifically with rugby in mind.
  • A Program designed to perform on days we can’t meet
  • Pre-Rehab sessions designed to prevent injury occurring in the 1st place
  • Massage if or when required

Due to time and expenses this can’t be offered free of charge but I can offer a discount.

Prices are:

  • £35 per session usually £50
  • £50 for one off sessions & Programs
  • Massage £40 performed at St Davids Square.

This would also include a £6.99 entrance fee to the Greenwich Gym for non-members only.

Clubhouse openings, meetings and games (w/c 27/10)

Games: A great result from the 1st XV and Llamas this week with wins registered against their opposition. As well as the 3rd XV and Venus having games on Saturday. A big thank you to all the hard work of the team managers in getting 4 teams out. This week let's build on the momentum from these games and get three from three again.

Please remember to Email selection@millwallrugby.com with your availability as soon as possible as it helps your team managers organise teams, confirm games with the opposition, and reduces any last minute cancellation costs we incur. It also helps their sanity and hairlines!!

Games this week are:
  • 1sts away @ Pegasus Palmerians
  • 2nds @ home to Basildon
  • 3rds away @ Burnham
  • Venus ladies (Sunday) - either home @ Hackney or away @ East London (awaiting confirmation as Millwall Park not available due to fireworks display)

Robin will be looking after you this week. So make sure you come down to the clubhouse and celebrate reaching the mid-point of the week and refreshing yourselves after the training session.

Also as a bonus this week Wiggy will be holding a short meeting after training to kick some destination ideas around for Mens Tour 2015 so make sure you hang around for this. We will be setting up a dedicated bank account for tour in the next few weeks so you can start saving for Tour.

Fishers 'Freaky' Halloween Friday - Open from 7.30pm
Your Halloween host this year is Fisher. So come down and celebrate the end of the working week with him. I am sure he will concocting some more strange beverages like a mad scientist for you so make sure you are there to keep him company (he gets scared easily if he is on his own).

Thirst Aid raises £490!

We raised £490!

What a fantastic night last Saturday was when so many of us came together to meet the new Physios, Sports Rehab specialists, Physio students and others and raise money towards the Physio students training costs and First Aid within the club.

Both aims were a massive success with lots of fun and games to get everyone mingling and then we had the fund raising itself. Our target was £350 and we well and truly smashed that, raising £490* overall between the night and donations which is a huge achievement for a club of our size for one night. Additionally, the bar takings for the night will be one of the biggest since the Open Day, adding funds to the club overall.

How the Money Will Be Spent

The money will now be spent as follows

  • Student Refunds (10 x £25) - £250
  • Future Training Costs e.g. guest lecturers - £100
  • Smocks Top (1 x 35 + post) - £40
  • Medical Screen - £60
  • Sports Massage Equipment - £40

This will benefit both the Physio students and members.

Thanks

Thanks are due to everyone who came along on the night, most especially the Physio students, and those who helped organise and run the night including Kate and Ed, for overall organisation, Andrew for posters and promotion, Flex for the raffle, Myles for Beer Pong, Charlie for Pizzas, the three DMs and all the bar staff, GG for the Boat Race, Stui on the music, the raffle ticket sellers, shot sellers, Robin for his welcome, Kate and Kazu for the carnival game, and donation of Sake, all those who donated prizes or helped in any way or just came on the night!

Donations - make it a round £500

* If you'd like to give £10 and make it a round £500 or indeed make a further donation, please contact  me on firstaid@millwallrugby.com or donate directly to the club via our Charity and we can get the additional Gift Aid

Rugby Basics - this Saturday at 10am

Following a successful launch last week, the club will be running another Rugby Basics session (coached by Tim - thanks!) this Saturday again at 10am until 12 noon on Millwall Park, alongside Island Gardens DLR

It's ideal for:

  • Men & Women who played at school, but haven't played for years,
  • Men & Women who have never ever played rugby before,
  • Social members, volunteers or physions curious to learn more,
  • Touch Rugby players who'd like to learn a bit about the full Rugby Union game.
  • Current third team players who would like to improve their technique
  • Current players who'd like to learn about playing in a different position.
What to bring:
  • Yourself ready to have fun.
  • Some football or rugby boots if you have them (trainers are OK if you don't)
  • Shorts & old t-shirt or rugby jersey that can get muddy
  • Something warm and dry to put on afterwards
  • a black bin bag to protect your bag if it rains
  • Maybe a bottle of water
Our third team manager, James will also be there to meet you if you'd like to find out more about playing regularly.... but there will be no pressure to do that until you would like to.

Please rugbybasics@millwallrugby.com for more info.

We plan to run these MOST Saturdays until further notice.

EVEN if you can't make this session but are interested, please do email rugbybasics@millwallrugby.com to let us know you're interested or signup for our club emails here.

Hope to see you on Saturday!

Regards
Andrew

Update for Members from the October CMC meeting last night (14th Oct)

Hello everyone,

A few weeks ago I promised I would start to write a short update with the key points that come out of club management committee meetings.

Here are some of the highlights:

  • O2 Touch Rugby: Nigel Webb attended to talk about the already popular Sunday touch rugby sessions.  He provided an update and explained the intention to enter spring/summer leagues next year.

  • Chairman's Lunches: We are going to look into the idea of hosting lunches for visiting committee and life members to happen when oppositions visit us, called "Chairman's Lunches". Other clubs do this.

  • Finances: Adrienne will start to produce a set-format management committee monthly report to help the rest of the committee be more aware of finances, so if you have any questions more of the committee will understand the numbers better.  Andrew (Comms Officer) will also work with Adrienne (Treasurer) to present the costs the club has in a way that is visual and people can understand.  This will go in the programme regularly and probably on the clubhouse wall somewhere.

  • Training: Reported low numbers at some training sessions recently - discussion held as to how we get more people to turn up - we can all play a part in encouraging others to come to training. If there is a reason why numbers are low we need to know so we can do something about it asap (please tell someone on the committee or email me if you prefer).  It's not fair on the coaches who work hard to plan sessions for us.

  • Recruitment of players: A longer discussion was held around what we can do to attract new players to the club. Neil Sweeney, Rugby Development Officer attended from the RFU.  A serious effort is now required at recruitment and everyone needs to be involved.  It was noted that Rugby Basics and Sunday Touch were already contributing new players.  Noting the need also to attract experienced players, we've agreed a brand new "player-get-player" incentive that we will announce shortly. Iwan will be getting some of you involved with making a promotional video to share on YouTube and Facebook.  Players will be involved in finding more players via drinks nights in City and Canary Wharf bars - we have lots of flyers to give out. Some simple low-cost Facebook and Google advertising will also begin in coming weeks as a trial.  It was noted that there had been a significant increase in press coverage recently and that this should begin to help with recruitment and sponsorship.  Importantly, it was noted there was a lot that individual members could do to help, such as printing and displaying a poster (PDF 4.5Mb) at their work/gym, taking some flyers, phoning rugby friends, or even as simple as liking, sharing and commenting on our Facebook posts and retweeting our tweets rather than just reading them.

  • Rugby Basics: as a key part of the strategy to get new players, it was noted that 5 people attended last week's session and a further 6 people had emailed interest/responded to the GumTree ad we placed. It was noted that this appeared to have been very successful, and the committee wanted this to continue on a regular basis. Thanks go to Tim McDonagh for starting this.
Whilst the management committee minutes are available to all members upon request to the secretary, it does take time to produce official minutes and to have them approved at the following meeting.

Please DO comment below if you found this update helpful  :-).  It's not meant to be a substitute for minutes... and there are probably some things I've forgotten to note.

Best regards
Andrew

Selection - Why you need to tell us your availability so early in the week

Our fixture secretary has a difficult job to do in making sure each team in the club has a match each week. But it's made more difficult for him and your team managers if you don't give your availability until late in the week.

Why?

Because he has to give an indication to the league on a TUESDAY at 6pm whether or not we'll have enough players for a game that week.

Why?

So that pitches can be cancelled without penalty charges and league oppositions know whether we are playing.  If we confirm a game on a Tuesday and end up cancelling later in the week, then we have to waste your money on pitches we can't use and sometimes also on transport/catering etc.

What you need to do to help

So, if you know you definitely ARE, or definitely AREN'T available to play on a Saturday, please let us know on a MONDAY.  If there is a particular reason why you're a still a "maybe", it can sometimes help if you explain when you'll know for sure. Please don't be one of those people we have to phone up each week to ask.

What is the committee going to do about it?

Your team managers will start asking you after games and at Monday night training if you are available for the following week, which we think should help us avoid problems with fixtures.

Volunteer cooks & kitchen helpers needed

It's Friday night and Shaun's down at the club cooking up an Italian special for after tomorrow's game!

By cooking ourselves we can save more than £50 every match day.

Are you willing to take a turn on a rota to cook for us?  You'll probably need a kitchen hand to help you tidy up afterwards, so why not volunteer as a pair?

If you and a friend are willing to help out on a rota occasionally, please contact paulfisher@millwallrugby.com our Volunteer Coordinator.

(We'll be eternally grateful!)

THIRST AID - Social - Saturday 11 October

Are you in need of THIRST AID?

Whether you prefer to come as you are, or get Tangled up in Tape, just come along and have Phun with our Physios.

It's next Saturday 11 October from 7pm after the matches.

We've got pizzas, shots, a raffle, and games including a boat race and beer pong. It's for members, guests, students, new members & friends of the club.

It's a club social event to raise funds for Physio & First Aid training and everyone is welcome. In fact we're encouraging you to bring other friends along as we're looking to encourage more players and social members to join.

Come as you are - or get out your old sports kit, old team ties, sweatbands and injury supports or even just a token bit of strapping!

It's at Millwall Rugby Club Clubhouse, right next to Island Gardens DLR station and the event is strictly over 18s only.

It would be great if you would donate a raffle prize (or can contact a business that can donate a prize to us). Please contact Ed socialsecretary@millwallrugby.com if you can help.

Finally, please tell us you're coming on Facebook and use the INVITE feature on Facebook to invite your friends along.  It will be a great night!

Team Sheets

Team sheets have been posted on the usual page.

Kickoff tomorrow is 2pm on Millwall Park, so if you're not playing come down to cheer on the guys in the first round of the RFU National Vase. We're playing Old Actonians so it should be a very competitive game!

See everyone tomorrow
