HELP - APPEAL FOR NEW TEAM MINIBUS DRIVERS
Paul & Brigitte are on the look out for some new volunteers for 2015/6 season to drive the minibuses to games - ideally these should be non players or a couple of players from each of the 1st 2nd and 3rd teams.

The criteria is that you must have a clean UK licence and held the licence for 2 years. You will be required to attend a half day training course and drive the bus at least 5 times during the season. All costs (£91.92) are paid for by the club.

We need drivers to keep this valuable resource going as it reduces costs and keeps subs low (this scheme allows us to get a minibus for around 25% of the cost of hiring one with a driver).

Also this season the club will pay for a taxi when dropping the bus back from the minibus drop off point (opposite 5 bells) back to the clubhouse and you get a free pint when you get back from dropping off the minibus!!

If you can help, please contact paul@millwallrugby.com or brigitte@millwallrugby.com or speak to them in person

Pre-Season Game Saturday 29th August

Hello Millwallians,

We have our first pre-season game on Saturday, against Southwark. We are playing up at Hackney Marshes (Hackney Marshes Centre, Homerton Road, E9 5PF) as the pitch on Millwall Park is not available yet. Kick off time is 2.30 and meet time is 12:30 at the club, minibuses have been organised to take us there and back. Fines for lateness will be issued so make sure you are all on time. The game will be four 20 minute quarters so everyone will get some game time.

Please send your availability to menschair@millwallrugby.com for this weekend by Wednesday. We are practising set pieces this Wednesday in training so everyone should try to make it down.

After the game we will head back to the club for a beer, and we have also been invited to the bowls club round the corner for some bowls, BBQ and extremely cheap beer. The rugby club will also be showing the international games.

See you on Wednesday

Boris

Millwall RFC grand day out at the bowls club next door

Its that time of year again as misty eyed men with club ties reminisce about late August last year, when our friendly local bowls club invited us to play, eat, drink and be merry.

"Dry those tears" I hear you shout. They have done it again, and as such you are all cordially invited to repeat last year on their green next to the rugby club.

The order of the day is as follows:

When: Saturday 29th of August

Venue
North Greenwich Bowls Club

Address: 197 E Ferry Rd, London E14 3AY (under the arches and behind the hedge when walking from the club in the direction of Mudchute DLR)

Timings:
- Get there from 13:00 onwards
- Bowling starts at 15:00 (weather permitting)
- Beers throughout
- BBQ after bowling commences timing depending on demand
- those playing in the warm up game against Southwark we will arrive later and they are all ok with this.

Items to note:
- mixed bowling, they plan to split teams with pros and Millwall rugby club members to mix it up a bit and give everyone a chance to learn from the greats

- CASH only bar: bring enough or be prepared for the long hike to equinox with a quid and a bit sting in the tail

- £5 for BBQ: schoolboy error to forget your lunch money

- For those who want the authentic bowls experience - some sort of "bowling" Whites and a straw boater.

- As before Shorts and skirts are allowed, the only fixed rule is no hard heels on the green, so bring flats, trainers or plimsolls/pumps to play.

AAAARRRRRR! It be Cornish night!!

Whether ye be a scurvy sea dog or the village idiot there is plenty of place for eye patches, smocks, straw hats, wooden legs and pitchforks (not real ones) including any other stereotypes we can lump onto the beautiful county of cornwall.

Get down for a wurzelling good time on cider, sing a few sea shanties, have plenty of grog and survive a good old fashioned keelhauling, (all in the appropriate attire of course), and walk the plank of shame all the way home (or someone else's house/gym treadmill). All at the fantastic Millwall rugby club CORNISH NIGHT!

LAST ONE UP THE OLD SEA DOG GETS A LICK OF THE CAT!

On offer among all manner of bounteous treats are the following:
- "Cornish Gold"
- "Scrumpy"
- "Ratler"
- "Proper job"
- Paddles of cider for those who just cant decide
- cornish shots......(i don't know either..)
- and of course the obligatory pasties

don't forget your gear, or do and have to bargain an eye patch or a maritime related hat at the bar for a few pieces of eight.

Return to Rugby Project - Kick Off Meeting this Monday

Meeting after training this Monday

Following last year's successful "Rugby Basics" programme, we have plans to start it off again this season. But the great news is that the idea has "gone national" and is going to be marketed nationally as a "Return to Rugby" Programme starting around Sep 14th.

Millwall has been invited to be one of a small number of clubs involved in the launch, which could be a really exciting opportunity for us!

To make it work we need people interested in coaching, participating, involving the new guys socially in the club and probably more besides.

To kick it off, Martin MacTaggart from the RFU will be coming along to speak to us after training tomorrow night (Monday 17th August) at 9pm.

If you are interested in learning more, please come along at 9pm Monday.

Please let me know you're coming by emailing me at andrew@millwallrugby.com

Changes to our #O2Touch Rugby Sessions

Changes to timings

Our Thursday touch rugby sessions have now stopped for the summer in order to let you all focus on main club training.  We've noticed numbers dropping off, so decided it's time to stop.  The Sunday sessions however will continue, as always, throughout the winter.

We're changing the time of Sunday sessions to bring it half an hour earlier to help organisers who run other sessions in the morning.  The new time will be 12.30pm until 2.30pm.  This is effective from this coming Sunday 15th August.

Changes to session fees

Effective immediately: in the interests of encouraging participation in our Millwall Park sessions we've decided to abolish the £3 fee for non-members to play.  This means that, like all our club training, all Millwall Park sessions are now free of charge.  We will still be taking a register however, as this is a requirement of our O2Touch sponsorship.

Effective from January 2016: recognising the costs of entry into the competitions (which can be upwards of £350), as well as the fact that we now provide shiny kit for you to wear, we've decided to bring our competition/league-sessions in line with the rest of the club.

  • This means that you must be a fully paid up and current member of the club to be selected to play and you'll need to pay match day subs to contribute... unless you're a life member.
  • Rather than being £10 as with our full-contact rugby, the subs for touch rugby will be a reduced £5 (unemployed the same).
  • As is usual, regular club volunteers benefit from 50% off what they would otherwise have to pay.
  • The same trial rules apply for people who have never been members before (one game with no match subs to pay, and no membership requirement until just prior to third game)

If you've got any questions, please email one of us on the touch rugby committee (Nigel, Darryl, Scott, Mike, Andrew)

Players Meeting This Wednesday

Hello Millwallians,

We are hurtling towards the first games of the new season. Three mens pre-season games have been organised, squad games on the 29th August and 5th September against Southwark (Home) and Wanstead (Away). Following that there will be two friendlies, 1st XV and a 2nd XV friendlies, against Old Streetonians 1st XV and 2nd XV. The first league games begin on 19th September.

This coming week, myself and our new coach Matt Watts, want to have a pre season meeting with the players to discuss the coming season. This will happen on Wednesday 12th August (THIS WEEK) and I hope that as many players can make it as possible. We will finish training half an hour early to incorporate the meeting.

Also, from now on, all players coming down to mens training should expect contact and so should bring gumshields etc to ensure that everyone has their teeth prior to the start of the season.

Looking forward to seeing everyone this week.

Cheers

Boris
