Millwall volunteers raise over £2,950 for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal

Just a note to let you all know that £22,559.50 was raised in Tower Hamlets for the Poppy Appeal (that's £3,300 up on last year).

Of that total, an impressive £2,957.29 was collected by Millwall Rugby Club volunteers. This is just over £100 up on last year.

A big thank you to Brigitte, our club volunteer coordinator and all those who gave up their time to do this.

Volunteers with benefits

Volunteering at Millwall has benefits!

Did you know that regular volunteers at Millwall qualify for 50% off their annual membership fee?
And did you also know that players who volunteer qualify for 50% off their match day subs?
So if you play at least 15 games a year, this discount could be worth £100 or more as a thank you for your time and effort.

If you want to save some money on your membership, why not give a little of your time instead? If you want to know what might be involved in some of the various roles, take a look here.

Please email volunteer@millwallrugby.com to find out how you could help.

This discount for volunteers was introduced in 2011. Here is a reminder of the rules as they currently stand:
  • The discount applies to all club management committee roles and all other elected positions automatically.
  • The discount is also also be available to all other club subcommittee members and volunteers, including unpaid coaches and unpaid referees providing it's supported by the relevant subcommittee chair (eg Men's Chair/Ladies' Chair/Youth Chair) and subsequent approval by CMC. It's up to the subcommittee chairs to identify the volunteers who should get this discount. While that happens a volunteer may need to pay the full amount and receive a rebate later following CMC approval.
  • The discount now also applies to regular bar staff if approved per the above - (this change happened when we withdrew the clubhouse credit/free drink vouchers.)
  • The discount on subs applies as long as the committee member/volunteer continues to serve as such. A discounted membership shall remain valid as long as the committee member/volunteer continues to serve.
  • The discount applies to all categories and methods of paying membership except life membership.

Nominate by 19th December: Canary Wharf Sports Personality of the Year Awards

We are calling for nominations from our members for the annual Canary Wharf Sports Personality of the Year Awards, which celebrate high-achieving athletes, sports clubs and administrators from the East End of London over the past 12 months. Nominations close on December 19th.

The award ceremony will be held on the Thursday 5 February at the East Wintergarden, Canary Wharf, and will be attended by special sporting guests along with a host of local dignitaries.

In the past, Millwall Rugby Club members have won awards and it would be fantastic to have a table of nominees attending again this year.

Nominations are being called for the Individual Achievement Award, Senior Team of the Year, Junior Team of the Year, Group of the Year and the Voluntary Commitment Award, with cash prizes and trophies to be won in each category. Entries close on Friday 19 December 2014.

For more information and to nominate, visit the Canary Wharf website here.

Volunteer cooks & kitchen helpers needed

It's Friday night and Shaun's down at the club cooking up an Italian special for after tomorrow's game!

By cooking ourselves we can save more than £50 every match day.

Are you willing to take a turn on a rota to cook for us?  You'll probably need a kitchen hand to help you tidy up afterwards, so why not volunteer as a pair?

If you and a friend are willing to help out on a rota occasionally, please contact paulfisher@millwallrugby.com our Volunteer Coordinator.

(We'll be eternally grateful!)

Will you collect for the Poppy Appeal?

Last year we raised over £2000 for the poppy appeal (£1500 in 2012) by collecting at Canary Wharf DLR and Tube Stations for 2 hours each weekday over a 2 week period.

In total over £105,000 was raised in Poplar and Millwall. This year we have been asked to help again and hopefully raise even more money as 2014 marks the 100th anniversary of World War One.

We need 2 volunteers each evening Monday – Friday between 5pm and 7pm at Canary Wharf DLR / Tube stations from 25.10.14 to 10.11.14 selling poppies to the public.

Can you assist by giving up 2 hours or more for this year’s appeal ?

I am currently putting a rota together - so please email me on paulfisher@millwallrugby.com with your availability.

Many Thanks for your support

Paul
