Upcoming April Events!

Millwall’s Upcoming April Events!

April is going to be a very busy month with Millwall!  Please see the listings below since it looks like there will be something on every Saturday in April!

Girls Vs. Boys, 6th of April, 7 pm - ?

Posted on behalf of Venus Rugby:
As a collaboration between the men’s and women’s side, we are organizing the ultimate battle of the sexes to find out once and for all who rules the other!
The night will consist of different challenges and to make sure that you are victorious you better bring your A game, as the night will test your drinking, social and creative skills.
We all hope to see you on Saturday the 6th of April at the clubhouse, where the challenge will commence from 7PM.

May the best sex win!
Rocky’s Testimonial, 13th of April 12 pm - on

Posting this on behalf of Larry and Rocky. Seriously folks, this will be a great day and Rocky is a great guy so come on down and play and celebrate with him! - Brigitte

From Larry:

You lot,

We are pleased to announce that we now have a date cast in stone for this event so lets take the opportunity to make it a good one. The season will be over so we can all have a bit of fun.

Can you please forward this to as many friends that you can to make sure that we get the whole club covered. Anyone who has not done so please stick your name on the team sheet link below. Likewise those of you who made spurious excuses to avoid a tackle will need to man up this time.

I am thinking about ideas for prizes on the day so drop me a message if you have a Eureka moment. I was thinking maybe free beer for the first high tackle on Sean Russell or something of that ilk.

Take care and keep the high balls low.

Larry

Notice of General Meeting to Incorporate

Incorporation Meeting and Q&A Session

Thursday April 4th, 9pm

Clubhouse

Please note that there will be a meeting in the clubhouse on the above night to go through the various documents necessary to incorporate the club i.e. to turn it into a Limited  Company. This is a recommended step for rugby clubs now for the following main advantages

  • Allow the club act as a legal entity
  • Protect the Committee from being personally sued due to club involvement
Please contact Flex for further details, flex@millwallrugby.com. The sub-committee will explain the advantages and disadvantages and answer questions.

This is not a vote and is open to all members. Its quite important that  as many people as possible understand  the  implications of what the club is undertaking.

Members will have time to examine the  documents in preparation for a vote at the  AGM on April 27th.

Thanks

Life Membership offer

Life Membership offer for £700

In  order to fund the floodlights and build longer term relationships within the club, the Club has reduced the fee for Life Membership to £700 from £1000 for a limited time.

This offer will be open until the House of Commons Dinner on May 11th and is open to anyone who has been a  member for 3 years. If you've not been here that long, come and talk to us and we'll make a pro-rata reduction.

On a purely financial basis, it pays for itself after about 3 years and you don't have the hassle of standing orders, membership or subs each week. If you're like a certain Chairman who's been a member for 9 years, you'll be kicking yourself you didn't do it earlier...

To take up the offer, contact the Treasurer, Edna, treasurer@millwallrugby.com, or Chairman, Tim, chairman@millwallrugby.com

Thanks

Tim

The Prime Minister's Visit and Youth Re-launch

Now that the dust has settled somewhat, its a good time to reflect on what brought David Cameron and Lord Coe down to the club last weekend and what it can mean for Millwall (and no, it wasn't that the PM is interested in a Tank's hooker's position)

£150 Million
As many of you will know, they ostensibly came down to publicise the fact that the Government are investing £150 million into primary schools, about £10,000 into each, allowing each primary school direct control over their sports involvement and thus continuing the legacy of the Olympics. Leaving the politics aside, any investment into sport has to be good and we'd hope that some of that will come Millwall's way to the betterment of the club and its members.

Reasons
The visit certainly didn't come about by accident and the main reasons include:
The RFU are obviously working hard to highlight rugby's part to play in sport, particularly with the World Cup coming in 2015, and have a good relationship with the Government
We have a great relationship with the RFU and have shown with Stuart Lancaster's visit and the launch of RugbyForce that we can put on a well organised event in our superb clubhouse.
The club is convenient to central London. David Cameron had to be at the Spring Party conference after our visit
We're in a traditionally disadvantaged area where there is massive potential for rugby development, bringing the sport to many who would not otherwise have been involved
we have a fantastic club with great members and hard working committees, both present and past

Thanks
I'm sorry I couldn't share the arrangements with you and name our distinguished visitors but for reasons of security, I had to keep quiet until the morning of the event. No one else in the club knew and I had some explaining to do to my mother as well! It couldn't have happened without help so thanks in particular go to Scott for helping me organise it with the schools, Sophie for the press coverage and also everyone who turned up to help with the event, the kids training etc.

Youth
We should remember that the whole point from our point of view was Youth rugby development.

We all know young players are essential to any club but what a lot of people don't know is that Youth sections can finance adult rugby, the trade off being volunteer time, particularly at the start. A lot of grants are also conditional on Youth involvement. Plus we wouldn't be enjoying our rugby were it not for a Youth section somewhere.

We've been granted an extraordinary opportunity to rebuild the Youth section and I'm asking you to help make the most of it. If 8 people do one Sunday per month per person for 3 months, April, May and June, that should be enough time to get the momentum and the parents. Just 6 hours. Contact myself or Scott  for further details, youthchair@millwallrugby.com

Finally, David Cameron and Lord Coe have asked us to give them an update on how we are doing, wouldn't be great to say we once again have a thriving Youth Section? I guarantee that would yield another visitor and money for the club.

For further details on the visit and some pictures, read Sophie's blog here
http://millwallrugby.blogspot.co.uk/2013/03/david-cameron-and-lord-sebastian-coe.html

Millwall Rugby Club's Youth Programme, for children aged 6-14, meets every Sunday from 11am - 1pm. It's free to attend and all levels of ability, from complete newcomers up, are welcome

Calling all Islanders!

First there was 'The Only Way Is Essex'. Then came 'Made in Chelsea'. Now it's our turn!

Tiger Aspect Productions is developing a brand new factual series called The Islanders (working title). Over the last month they have been filming on the Isle of Dogs and speaking to lots of people to become familiar with 'island life'. At this stage, what they are filming is not for broadcast, but to contribute to a development taster tape. If the powers that be like it, the series could go into production.

This Saturday, 23rd March, Tiger Aspects will be coming to Millwall Rugby Club to do some filming around the 1st XV match and they'd like to interview some club members who have lived on the island all their life or who work on the island.

Specifically, they want to hear more about island life and how the area has changed over the last 50 years. They are looking for stories from all perspectives - from youngsters to the grown-ups, and older!

Please email me asap at sophiemorris@millwallrugby.com if you have lived on the island for all/most of your life, or if you work on the island, and would be willing to be interviewed after the game on Saturday. I will need to get a bit more information from you to pass on to Tiger Aspect and will then schedule in the interviews.

This could be another great piece of exposure for the club and who knows...you could be the next Joey Essex!

David Cameron and Lord Sebastian Coe visit Millwall Rugby Club

David Cameron and Lord Sebastian Coe visited Millwall Rugby Club today and joined in a Youth 'Taster Session' to announce that primary school sport is set to be transformed thanks to a £150m-a-year boost that will improve coaching.

David Cameron with members of Millwall Rugby Club

The funding boost will allow for specialist sports coaches to provide tuition in primary schools, which will not only increase the standard of the sports taught, but will also increase participation in competitive sports outside of school activities and encourage children to remain active in sport through to adulthood.

David Cameron's Millwall Rugby Club
visit is broadcast live on BBC.
During the session, which was broadcast live on BBC One, children from local schools were given a taste of rugby by Millwall Rugby Club's Youth Coach Scott Vinnicombe, Randall Powell and the RFU's Neil Sweeney and Marcus Cattell. The Prime Minister himself and Lord Coe joined in a session, each heading up a team in a ball passing race, which the Prime Minister managed to win without slipping over on the very muddy pitch, much to the disappointment of the waiting camera crews.

The cold and hard rain didn't dampen the spirits of the children involved, or those of their parents watching from the sideline. In fact, most were enthused by the introduction to the sport and were keen to continue playing.

Thank you to all the club members who got up early to make this event happen and to the children and parents from the following schools for participating; Our Lady RC Primary School, St Edmund's Catholic Primary School, St Luke's Church of England Primary School and Cubitt Town Junior School.

David Cameron and Lord Sebastian Coe take part in a 'taster session' at
Millwall Rugby Club.

Milllwall Rugby Club's Youth Programme, for children aged 6-14, meets every Sunday from 11am - 1pm. It's free to attend and all levels of ability, from complete newcomers up, are welcome. Email youthchair@millwallrugby.com for more information.

Millwall Rugby Club is still looking for a main sponsor. If you'd like to be a part of this national headline making club, please email sophiemorris@millwallrugby.com

02 Touch programme - kick off meeting this Friday!

The club has agreed to be a leading participating club in the new 02 Touch initiative which will see £5k worth of funding coming into the club over 3 years to build up this touch franchise, with the aim of us being self-sufficient thereafter.

Scott Vinnicombe will be leading on this, but we need a team of organisers and volunteers to help him. I am arranging a kick off meeting with Scott and our RFU RDO, Neil Sweeney, this Friday at the clubhouse at 7pm.

If any of you are interested in getting involved in organising this, or helping out at the sessions themselves, please let me know. The meeting is open to all, but it doesn't matter if you can't make it. Scott will be able to brief everyone once we are set up.
